Summer 2003

Revealing & Concealing: The Mysterious Veil
Performed for centuries by women across the Orient and Mediterranean, the veil dance is a fascinating expression of femininity and grace. In this four hour creative, improvisational workshop, expand your movement vocabulary by learning the techniques of veil movement, wrapping, twirling, and turning. Practice with these movements, strengthens and develops the upper body-torso, triceps, biceps, lats, and expands one's breathing capacity, enhances one's posture and alignment, and gives one a direction, a dramatic design of expression and gesture that is uniquely feminine, vulnerable, mysterious and freeing. No prior knowledge of dance required; individuals of all levels of ability encouraged to attend. Please wear leggings and a tank top or sports tank to class and bring a three to three-and-a-half yard length of fabric, preferably silk chiffon, to use as a veil.

PERFORMANCES 2003

Spring 2003

Thursday, January 16, 2003
Journey along the Silk Road: A Caravan of Dance
The evocative term "The Silk Road" describes the network of caravan routes that once reached from China to the Mediterranean. The ancient culture of Afghanistan, which held a central position along this thriving commercial enterprise, was greatly enriched through the route's lively exchange of goods, ideas, aesthetics, and technical expertise. In conjunction with the exhibition "Afghanistan: A Timeless History," antiquities of Afghanistan from 2500 B.C.E. - 16th century, The Silk Road Dance Company of Washington D.C. brings the Silk Road to life through a program of dance. With narration by Andriana, storytelling, and other visual aids, the traditions of the cultures along this fabled route are beautifully illustrated. Sponsored by Laura Bush, Houston is this exhibit's only stop in the Western Hemisphere. Don't miss the opportunity to see this rare, beautiful, cultural art exhibit -- it may be the only chance of a life time!

Time: 6:00 - 7:00 PM
Place: The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
